-- Parallel and Distributed Computing, although within the focus of computer s- ence research for a long time, is gaining more and more importance in a wide spectrum of applications. These proceedings aim to demonstrate the use of p- allel and distributed computing concepts in di?erent application scenarios and attempt to spark interest in novel research directions to advance the embracing model of high-performance computing research in general. The objective of the workshop is to speci?cally address researchers coming from universities, ind- trial and governmental research organizations, and application-oriented com- nies in order to close the gap between purely scienti?c research and the app- cability of the theoretical ideas to real-life problems. The individual research contributions published in the current proceedings are the result of three di?- entworkshopsthatwerecollocatedattheEuro-ParConference2006inDresden, Germany: The CoreGRID Workshop on Grid middleware The general focus of the CoreGRID workshop is ?rst to assess the current state of the art; second, new approaches in the areas of Knowledge and Data M- agement on Grids, Grid Resource Management and Scheduling, and Grid Inf- mation, Resource and Work?ow Monitoring Services are discussed; and ?nally, it serves as a forum for the exchange of ideas between the user community and Grid middleware developers. The CoreGRID workshop on Grid middleware was organizedbytheCoreGRIDNetworkofExcellenceandtookplaceAugust28–29, 2006, in Dresden. CoreGRID is the European Research Network for streng- ening and advancing scienti?c and technological excellence in the area of Grid and Peer-to-Peer technologies.
