In: Springer eBooksSummary: Thisvolumecontainstheproceedingsofthe1stInternationalConferenceonWeb Reasoning and Rule Systems (RR2007). This conference was special in that it is the ?rst in a series whose ambitious goal is to be the major forum for discussion and dissemination of new results on all topics concerning Web reasoning and rule systems. TheimportanceofWebreasoningandrulesystemshasbeenconstantlygr- ing in the recent years, becoming more and more crucial for the future of the Web and of information handling. However, discussions on these aspects were, so far, distributed among a number of di?erent events, lacking a common focus event. The newRR series?lls this gap, andprovidessucha uni?ed forum, giving reasoning and rules the ?rst-class role they deserve, and o?ering the place for the best research on these topics to be presented, discussed, and advanced. Initsunifyingrole,RR2007broughttogetherthreepreviouslyseparateevents: the International Workshop on Principles and Practice of Semantic Web R- soning (PPSWR), the InternationalConference onRules and Rule Markup L- guages for the Semantic Web (RuleML), and the International Workshop on Reasoning on the Web (RoW). Every merge needs e?ort, but we have to remark how,in this case, there was an enthusiastic support that made it possible, rather exceptionally, for this conference to take place as early as this year, whereas the initial planning was for 2008: this witnesses the big need for such a c- mon forum, bringing together initially di?erent communities as soon as possible, overcoming all the timing di?culties for a higher goal.
